Chapter 7 post 1
I view all three solutions as a great way to view stress. The first and second solutions probably works out better for me because of the balance of school, work, and my own personal time. The book states that we can view work as what we do for the sake of something else, while play is what we do for its own sake. This relates to school for me because we need to finish school to get a better paying job. That is the outcome we want when get the degree but at the same time I find myself looking at it as a game. I challenge myself in class and at work so that there an incentive to going everyday. Maybe at school I set a little goal for myself i.e. participant more in class when discussion get dull, or at work lets set a better product out than yesterday; lets put a smile on everyone's face and let our customer service be 110%. The book states this as "lighten up to take the view that play is an attitude of mind that may pervade any human activity."

The whole “View work as what we do for the sake of something else” thing reminds me of a quote from the Denzel Washington movie The Great Debaters. In it, one character proclaims, “We do what we have to do in order to do what we want to do.” The message is very similar.
ReplyDeleteI’ve heard students make this comparison before; do the coursework, pass the tests and get the degree. You may hate it now, but in the end it’s all worth it - understanding that nothing worth doing is ever easy. Perspective and attitude are key components of chapter 7, if you keep both in check your likely to lead a much healthier, stress-free life.
I like your view of looking at your tenure in school as a game, because that way you challenge your limits to go for more. I also appreciate your attitude of looking at work positively by giving your more than 100% at customer service.
ReplyDeleteIt is said that when you are doing something you are passionate about, you do not get stressed doing it. So I like the way you focus in your work and studies very passionately like an interesting game. That’s what gives you the right mindset to perform at both levels to your best, and that too without getting frustrated or stressed.
I think looking at school as a game is a good strategy and incentive to do better. By viewing mundane routine such as school or work as competitive, we are more likley to strive for achievement. Furhtermore, we are bound to do more, rather than simply getting by doing what's easy or comfortable. I think it would be wise for me to try this outlook as I feel it is beneficial to have a little healthy competition with yourself, in order to reach your full potential. I also agree with your idea that the first two solutions are better as they help you find balance admist a hectic schedule.
