Chapter 7 Post 3 Distress
The concept I chose for this week was the distress concept from chapter 7. The book describes distress as, "people may experience distress, which arises when they don't feel that they have control over the situation and when the source of stress is unclear. Also distress is experienced more by some then others or occurs at different times in people's lives. My experience was a couple semesters ago where I had to do a group presentation to a bunch of people convincing them that its better to rent than to buy especially during these rough times. I know it sounds pretty simple; but before and the day off the presentation my friends told me I wasn't being myself, doing things that usually I don't do, I was getting headaches and stomach problems. After the presentation all the symptoms went away, it was just the thought of trying to convince strangers and the questions that might arise scared me. Once I knew I could conquer that situation, it was a little it easier now doing presentations to strangers.

The distress concept is one in which many people can relate to. From a personal view when I’m not in control of a situation I feel powerless and I begin to get anxious. When giving presentations to groups of people the stress of executing greatly effects the levels of distress that one feels. What I have learned to do when giving presentations to groups is to not try to over think things and be concerned with the overall outcome, or how you will be perceived. When you mentally psyche yourself out is when the most mistakes are actually made. My advice is to be prepared and knowledgeable of the material and the rest should just fall into place.
ReplyDeleteStress is something that is really hard to manage, especially when it becomes out of control. Distress is one of the worst ones I think one can feel. When we feel like we have no control over a situation, it makes me even more stressed out than before, because an event is still going on when you have no say in it. I have also been in a similar school situation. It is totally not fair, and I feel for you!
ReplyDeleteI think that you did a great job on your post. I really feel that stress can push a lot of people over the limit. Distress is something I feel is very common for us students and we really need understand the extent of it. I feel that at the end of almost every semester I stress myself out regardless of my grade going into finals, even if I have an A. I think that, I in a sense almost worry myself crazy and thats where the distress kicks in. I need to realize that the old cliche of "give it your best and thats all that matters" kicks in and it allows for me to realized thats all I can do, and its almost as if the pressure just goes away. Great post!
